Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or to relieve specific pains like osteoarthritis of the knee. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture simply to enhance their feeling of wellbeing. The translation between the patterns of Chinese medicine and western named conditions is a fascinating one. For nearly every named condition you bring to your practitioner, like nausea, or osteoarthritis of the knee, there is a complex weave of different syndromes and patterns within which it is understood. The symptoms are important, a bridge between what you experience and how the practitioner, be they eastern or western, makes sense of what you bring to them. In 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS, as a cost-effective short-term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain. You can get more information on current scientific research into the effectiveness of acupuncture by visiting the British Acupuncture Council's website or by speaking to a BAcC registered acupuncturist at Acupuncture South Devon on 07767 665677.

Establishment: Fiona Matthews is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and the British Medical Acupuncture Society. She founded Acupuncture South Devon in 1997 and has developed successful clinics at the Sunnydale Natural Health Centre in Ivybridge, the Nuffield Hospital in Plymouth and the Southernhay Clinic in Exeter. Fiona started nursing in 1981 specialising in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London where she gained her orthopaedic National Certificate. Her General Nursing training was completed at the North Middlesex Hospital, in London where she qualified as a State Registered Nurse. Initially nursing on general medical wards, Fiona decided to return to her native Devon and continue her orthopaedic speciality in Plymouth. After gaining further experience on a rehabilitation unit and a variety of orthopaedic wards she was involved in managing, mentoring and assessing nursing staff. Fiona was then instrumental in opening the Orthopaedic Trauma Unit when it moved to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where, as the Sister of the unit, she discovered acupuncture. Fiona witnessed a small number of patients being treated with acupuncture for pain relief and became very impressed with the results and as a health care professional she wanted to be able to offer this service on the unit to give more patients a wider and more informed choice. In 1992 Fiona completed a Medical Acupuncture course at the Centre for Complementary Medicine in Southampton. In 1994 Fiona undertook a 3 year degree level acupuncture course at the British College of Acupuncture in London, and after qualifying in 1997 she established Acupuncture South Devon clinic in Ivybridge and also at the Plymouth Nuffield Hospital. The practices have expanded since 1997 and in 2011, she has developed the practice into the prestigious Southernhay Clinic in Exeter. Continually maintaining her professional development with regular supervision, and completing further development with facial enhancement courses in 2006. Fiona has also lectured at Saltash College, delivering the acupuncture module for their Complementary Therapy course. She regularly gives presentations, attending exhibitions increasing the awareness of the benefits of the therapy, so the public are able to make an informed choice. In recent years Fiona has been involved with various business groups taking advantage of self development opportunities and is a founding member of the Women Do Business - Active Learning Set in Ivybridge. This is a powerful tool that helps to focus on her practice as a business and maintains high professional standards. As a member of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce she's involved with the local business community and supports local charities, for example Operation Henry, an Ivybridge based charity supporting sufferers and their families of pancreatic cancer. More recently donating free treatment to Families For Children, a voluntary adoption agency based in Buckfast, Devon with a particular expertise in placing hard to place children with complex special needs. Image of Fiona Matthews Greeting Patient at Clinic With her medical background and membership of the British Medical Acupuncture Society Fiona feels she can give a balanced view and encourages the use of acupuncture to complement western medicine through her three practices in Devon. As a member of the British Acupuncture Council she abides by the Council's Code Of Safe Practice and Code Of Professional Conduct, complying with current Health and Safety legislation, and covered by full professional indemnity and public products liability insurance.
