Although Dementia is our principle focus we can also help people affected by Stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s, Essential Tremor or who require memory assessments. We know that seeing someone struggle with Dementia can be heart breaking. Reaching out for help and support is not a sign of failure. By being proactive you will be providing the very best care for your loved one or client and yourself, before a crisis is reached. There are solutions. We can help! An early diagnosis is hugely important as it enables people with Dementia to understand their condition and access treatments that could help relieve their symptoms and gives them time to plan for the future. Support following the diagnosis is also vital if people with Dementia and their carers are to have the best quality of life possible. Put simply, the earlier we are able to help, the more that we can do. What is Dementia? Dementia is not a disease in its own right, but a progressive and largely irreversible clinical syndrome. Dementia is a range of symptoms that occur as a result of damage or changes to the brain, characterised by a widespread impairment of mental function. This damage may be due to disease or natural processes such as ageing. There are approximately 850,000 people in the UK living with Dementia, around 17,000 are under 65. Tell-tale signs A person living with Dementia may; •Struggle to remember recent events (although they may still recall things that happened in the past) •Find it hard to follow conversations or programmes on TV •Forget the names of friends or everyday objects •Cannot recall things they have heard, seen or read •Repeat themselves •Have problems thinking and reasoning •Feel anxious, depressed or angry about their forgetfulness •Find other people start to comment on their forgetfulness •Feel confused even when in a familiar environment. Although many people with Dementia can retain a positive personality, they can experience some or all of the following as their condition progresses. · Memory loss · Loss of language, · Disorientation, · Changes in personality, · Difficulties with daily living · Self-neglect, · Psychiatric problems, such as apathy and depression · Out of character behaviours such as aggression and sleep disturbances. Early diagnosis is key You should seek help without delay if your memory is not as good as it used to be. Sadly, In our experience, many people suffering with memory impairment don't get to the doctor soon enough or are put off by the thought of memory testing. Yet, an early diagnosis is hugely important as it enables people with dementia or memory impairment to understand their condition, access treatments that could help relieve their symptoms and gives them time to plan for the future. Supporting people earlier can also avoid costly hospital visits and allows carers to be able to carry on caring for people at home, delaying or even avoiding residential care. As part of our approach to do all we can to assist people with memory impairment, SP Care employ the CANTABmobile system, developed by Cambridge Cognition, to offer state of the art, patient friendly, touch screen-based memory assessments. These highly effective tests can be conducted in a patient’s home, care home, day centre or at one of our clinics. Results from each test is immediately compared to a database of more than 5,000 patients, so that an evaluation can be made as to whether a person's memory is 'normal' for their age, gender and level of education. At the end of the assessment, we will discuss the results and the options available for future treatment or care. Why you need an early Diagnosis If someone you care about is having memory problems, you may be wondering when is the right time to get them checked out. The answer is clear and simple Go Now! There are many benefits to an early assessment and diagnosis. One of the first and most clear-cut is that you may find treatable conditions that could be causing the memory loss or confusion. Treating ailments such as depression, stress, thyroid imbalance, or vitamin deficiencies could return your memory to normal. Of course if you do have Alzheimer’s or any other type of dementia, the real benefit of early diagnosis is early treatment. Early detection is vital in helping people with memory loss, whatever the cause may be. The sooner an assessment is made, the sooner appropriate treatment or support can be offered. Do you or anyone you care for • Get confused doing ordinary things? • Have difficulty in filling in a form, reading or concentrating? • Find it hard to remember a story on television? • Have trouble remembering recent events? • Have word finding problems? If the answer is yes, we recommend that you talk to your GP. If necessary, he or she can refer you privately to us. Alternatively if you prefer, you can book a consultation directly with us. We aim to see patients within 7 to 14 days. If you are worried about whether your relative is developing Alzheimer’s, answer the following questions. 1, Problems with judgment (problems making decisions, bad financial decisions, problems with thinking) 2, less interest in hobbies/activities 3, Repeats the same thing over and over (questions, stories, or statements) 4, Trouble learning how to use a tool, appliance, or gadget, (VCR, computer, microwave, remote control) 5, Forgets correct month or year 6, Trouble handling complicated financial affairs (balancing check book, income taxes, paying bills) 7, Trouble remembering appointments If you answer yes to two or more from the above, you need to get your relative assessed promptly by a specialist. Our Approach At a patients initial appointment Mr Davies, or one of his equally highly experienced team, conducts a thorough assessment, talking with the patient and a relative (or close friend), to explore the difficulties or problems being experienced and their effect on daily living. We will carry out tests to find out the strengths and weaknesses of memory, so it is important to have reading glasses or hearing aids to hand if these are used. We also gather detailed information about the patient’s background, past medical history and any current medical problems. As part of our approach to do all we can to assist people with memory impairment, SP Care employ the CANTABmobile system, developed by Cambridge Cognition, to offer state of the art, patient friendly, touch screen-based memory assessments. Results from each test is immediately compared to a database of more than 5,000 patients, so that an evaluation can be made as to whether a person's memory is 'normal' for their age, gender and level of education. At the end of the assessment, we will discuss the results and the options available for future treatment or care. After each assessment a letter will be sent to your GP to let him/her know the results. You will be offered a copy of this letter.
